Five games to go and Roma takes the lead of the championship, putting Inter in second place after 4 years of leading the Scudetto race.
On Saturday evening Inter took part in a dramatic 2-2 draw in Firenze against Fiorentina. Many people, especially some press from Rome were arguing about the match, suggesting that Inter and Fiorentina silently agreed to arrange it for Inter. In exchange the Nerazzurri would have lost the upcoming match in the Italian Cup, scheduled on next Tuesday, which is also against Fiorentina. That’s the despicable standard of some of the Italian press.
Instead, the match was a great one. Fiorentina took the lead in the early minutes with brazilian striker Keirrison and mantained the control of the game despite Inter attacking will full power. The Nerazzurri were able to draw and then took the lead with Samuel Eto’o finishing a fantastic counter attack when only 8 minutes were left in the game. But then a terrible mistake from Julio Cesar let Per Kroldrup score make the final score a 2-2 draw. Inter is not as clinical as it has been in the past, and Roma is taking advantage of this.
The Giallorossi quickly went up 2-0 at home against struggling side Atalanta and then managed to survive the game with a win despite the 2-1 by Tiribocchi, suffering a lot from physical play, but sealing an important victory that puts the championship in their hands now. Inter has to finish the league in front of them in order to win and Roma apparently now has only one difficult game to play, the Derby against Lazio (fantatsic comeback today for the Biancazzurri, 2-3 in Bologna) next Sunday.
We’ll see what will happen. My advice, not only as an Inter fan but also because I know Italian football, is to not think that the war is over. On Friday Inter will face Juventus (1-0 at home against Cagliari), playing 2 days before Roma have to. Starting next week, all the games will be at the same kickoff time. It will be a tough race until the very end.
And it will be a race for two, in my opinion. AC Milan put themselves outside the race by drawing 2-2 at home against Catania, with Catania up 2-0 in the first half: another stunning goal and performance by Maxi-Lopez. Then, Borriello scored twice to put the final draw on the scoreboard, but there are too few games to go to overcome two tough teams like Inter and Roma.
Let’s talk about the rest of the league now!
Palermo (3-1 at home against Chievo, another double from Fabrizio Miccoli) and Sampdoria (1-0 against Genoa in the derby) will challenge themselves for the last Champions League spot. Napoli (dramatic loss 2-3 at home against stunning Parma) is now far from the Europe that everybody wants to reach.
In the relegation zone, Udinese is now comfortably safe: by winning 2-0 in Livorno, the Bianconeri are now completely focused on the Italian Cup semifinals second leg against Roma. Atalanta lost in Roma and now is facing Siena’s coming from behind in an amazing 3-2 win against Bari for Alberto Malesani’s lads (double from Ghezzal). Lazio, as we said, is now facing an important match, the derby against
Roma. Lazio are in good shape now and if they win, they will quite certainly avoid relegation. Let’s see what will happen, starting on Friday night with the clash of
the titans: Inter – Juventus.
